Yamal? You have to work very hard, we have the examples of Messi and Ronaldo

Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s coach, says the young star has immense quality but must not lose focus.

Lamine Yamal has been dazzling the football world at just 17 years old, continuing to surpass expectations with maturity far beyond his years.

His latest standout performance came in Barcelona’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Inter Milan in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals a match in which the teenager was not only one of the most dynamic players on the pitch but also demonstrated remarkable composure in a high-stakes European clash. With defenders struggling to contain his dribbling, creativity, and quick decision-making, Yamal once again proved that he belongs on the biggest stages in world football.

Ahead of Barcelona’s upcoming La Liga match against Real Valladolid, manager Hansi Flick took time to discuss Yamal's meteoric rise during the pre-match press conference. The German coach, known for his disciplined and structured approach, praised the young Spanish international but also offered words of caution and guidance.

“I think he knows what I expect from him,” Flick began. “When you’re able to play like that once, you can do it again. We can repeat it the level is there. But repetition, consistency, those only come with hard work. All players have room to improve and so does he. Lamine has talent and is a genius, yes, but for that talent to shine regularly and at the highest level, he needs to continue working incredibly hard. We have the greatest examples in Messi and Ronaldo two of the most talented players we’ve ever seen, but also two of the hardest working.”

Flick's comparison to Messi and Ronaldo isn’t made lightly. For many fans and pundits, Yamal’s natural flair and ability to turn games in an instant evoke memories of a young Lionel Messi breaking through at Barcelona nearly two decades ago. But Flick made it clear that raw talent alone is not enough to sustain a top-level career especially at a club with the expectations and scrutiny that come with wearing the Barça shirt.

“We need to stay calm with him and see how things develop. He’s young. He’s only 17,” Flick continued. “But what matters is that he stays humble, focused, and willing to learn. We’re very happy to have him with us and to be part of this stage in his journey. But he can’t think he’s done enough. He can’t have reached the peak of his career already absolutely not. He knows that, and I think he wants more. That’s a good sign.”

Despite his age, Yamal has already made history. Reaching the 100-match milestone for Barcelona before turning 18 is not just a statistic it’s a testament to his talent, trust from his coaches, and his durability in one of the most physically and mentally demanding environments in football. In those appearances, he has consistently made an impact, not only through goals and assists but also with his vision, unpredictability, and creativity in tight spaces.

Beyond the numbers, Yamal is fast becoming a symbol of the club’s new generation a homegrown talent stepping up at a time when Barcelona are rebuilding, trying to balance financial challenges, squad restructuring, and a return to elite European competition. His progress also reflects the club’s renewed focus on La Masia, their famed youth academy, which continues to produce technically gifted players capable of thriving at the top level.

As Barcelona prepare for a crucial run of fixtures including the second leg against Inter Milan and a potential Champions League final Flick and his staff are keen to manage Yamal carefully. Protecting him from overexposure, ensuring he gets enough rest, and surrounding him with experienced mentors will be key to maintaining his trajectory. Flick hinted that squad rotation could be important in the coming weeks, not only for physical reasons but also to keep young players grounded and hungry.

"Lamine is a joy to watch," Flick said. "But he's also still a kid, and we have to remember that. He has already done extraordinary things, but there’s still so much more to come. With the right mindset and the right people around him, he can be one of the best.”

The footballing world continues to watch closely as Lamine Yamal’s story unfolds. With every match, he seems to add a new chapter whether it’s a clever assist, a brilliant goal, or a fearless performance against some of Europe’s top defenders. But as Flick wisely reminded, now more than ever is the time to remain grounded. Greatness isn’t achieved overnight. It’s earned, every day, through effort, humility, and dedication.
